The Wood Duck is one of the few duck species that nests in tree cavities, sometimes 50 feet off the ground. Ducklings leap from the nest within 24 hours of hatching. The male's plumage is considered among the most elaborate of any North American bird, featuring iridescent greens, purples, and chestnut with bold white markings.
