The Pileated Woodpecker is the largest woodpecker in North America, roughly the size of a crow, with a dramatic red crest and powerful chisel-like bill. It excavates large, rectangular cavities in dead trees in search of carpenter ants, its primary food source, and these cavities are later used by owls, ducks, and other cavity-nesting species. The Pileated's loud, jungle-like call and undulating flight make it one of the most memorable birds of the eastern forest.
