The Mallard is one of the most recognizable ducks in the world and the ancestor of nearly all domestic duck breeds. The iridescent green head of the drake shifts color with the angle of light, one of nature's most striking displays. Found across North America, Europe, and Asia, Mallards are highly adaptable and can be found on everything from remote wilderness lakes to city park ponds. Females are famous for their loud, classic quack, while males make a softer, raspy sound.
