The Great Horned Owl is one of the most powerful and adaptable predators in North America, found in habitats ranging from dense forests to open deserts to city parks. It has no true horns, the tufts on its head are feathers used for communication and camouflage. Great Horned Owls are among the earliest nesting birds in North America, often incubating eggs in the dead of winter.
