The Great Horned Owl (GHOW) is one of the most widespread and adaptable owls in the Americas, found from Arctic tundra to tropical rainforest. It has no true horns; the tufts on its head are feathers used for communication and camouflage. Great Horned Owls are among the earliest nesting birds in North America, often incubating eggs in the dead of winter. Their grip strength is powerful enough to require significant force to open.
