The Common Loon is famous for its haunting, yodeling call, one of the most iconic sounds of northern lakes. Loons are built for diving, with solid bones unlike most birds, and can plunge over 200 feet underwater to catch fish. They are notoriously poor walkers on land because their legs are positioned so far back on their bodies, but in the water they are remarkably agile. Loons can live up to 30 years and typically mate for life.
