The Brown Pelican is the only pelican species that dives from the air to catch fish, plunging from heights of up to 60 feet. It was once endangered due to DDT but made a remarkable recovery and was removed from the endangered species list in 2009. Brown Pelicans are highly social birds, often flying in tight formation just above the water's surface, riding the updraft off the waves.
