The Belted Kingfisher is one of the few bird species in North America where the female is more colorful than the male, she sports a chestnut belly band that the male lacks. Kingfishers are expert divers, plunging headfirst into water from a perch or hover to catch fish with their heavy, dagger-like bill. They excavate nesting burrows up to 6 feet long in earthen banks. Their loud, rattling call is one of the most distinctive sounds along rivers and streams.
